For the last 40 years, the New Madrid area has been the most seismically active region in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains, and it has a history of large magnitude earthquakes going back several thousand years. Though no knowledge of an imminent large earthquake exists, the USGS has serious concerns about the potential repeat of a destructive earthquake in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, like the remarkable earthquake sequence that occurred in the winter of 1811–1812. This sequence of earthquakes was felt 800 to 1000 miles away along the Eastern Seaboard. President James Madison felt these earthquakes in Washington D.C., and wrote about the shaking he felt in a letter to Thomas Jefferson.
Geologic evidence from sand blows shows that sequences of large earthquakes with magnitudes ranging from 7 to 8 also occurred in this region in about 1450 A.D., 900 A.D., and 2300 B.C. The geologic evidence indicates that these earthquakes were large with strong aftershocks that produced prolonged and severe ground motions in the area that is now home to several million people.
Similar risk exists today
A repeat of the 1811–1812 earthquakes in the New Madrid Seismic Zone today threatens northern Alabama, northeastern Arkansas, southern Illinois, southern Indiana, western Kentucky, northern Mississippi, southeastern Missouri, and western Tennessee. Recent USGS projections place the likelihood of a magnitude 6 or higher earthquake at about 25 to 50 percent over the next 50 years, and the likelihood of a magnitude 7 or higher earthquake at 10 percent.
With large cities such as Memphis, St. Louis, Little Rock, and Nashville experiencing strong shaking from a large-scale New Madrid earthquake, understanding earthquake hazards helps communities prepare for them, thereby reducing losses and speeding recovery.
Faults sometimes bring together rocks with different magnetic properties. These variations in magnetic properties produce very small magnetic fields that can be measured with low-flying aircraft, allowing USGS scientists the ability to map and characterize faults even though they may be completely hidden by vegetation or young sediments.

An earthquake is one of the worst natural disasters on our earth. We think that the ground we stand on is very stable, but it isn’t. It moves quite a lot. In the last few decades scientists have been able to find out why earthquakes happen.
Earthquakes happen when there is a sudden vibration in the earth’s crust. It’s like a large lorry that travels down your street. When it passes by, you feel your house shake.
In the middle of the 20th century scientists found out that continents do not always stay in the same place. They have been moving on plates for millions of years. The earth’s surface is made up of many such plates. Where two plates meet magma comes out of the inner part of the earth . These areas are called faults—breaks in the earth’s crust.
How plates move
When two plates move away from each other lava or magma comes out of the earth. Most of this happens at the bottom of oceans, where the earth’s crust is very thin. Lava cools down when it reaches the water and underwater mountains are formed.
When plates push towards each other—one of them slides under the other. Rocks are pushed up and new mountains are formed.
Some plates slide past each other— for example, one moves north and the other moves south . When these plates move along faults a lot of energy is released and the biggest earthquakes happen.
Three of the known seven (7) Super Volcanoes are located in the United States. Yellowstone, which is the best known and is also the most likely to erupt, is in Wyoming. Long Valley Super Volcano in California, and the Valles Calderas Super Volcano in New Mexico are the others. The worlds other Super Volcanoes are Lake Toba in Indonesia, Taupo Super Volcano in New Zealand, Aira Caldera Super Volcano in Japan, and the Siberian Tarps Super Volcano, in Russia. The Siberian Tarps Super Volcano is by far the largest of the Super Volcanoes, and is often referred to as Yellowstone's' "Big Sister." According to the "experts", the Eruption of a super volcano will happen "sooner or later" and will chill the planet and threaten human civilization. The bad news is: There's not a thing we can do about it. A Super Volcano Eruption would dwarf the eruption of Mount St. Helen's. The Eruption would be about 100 times larger and would likely devastate an area the size of the United States with pronounced deterioration of the global climate for years following the Eruption. The Effect of a Super Volcano Eruption would be severe, and would likely result in the devastation of World agriculture and severe disruption of the food supply, which would result in world-wide mass starvation.

17 The seventh angel poured out his bowl into the air, and out of the temple came a loud voice from the throne, saying, “It is done!”18 Then there came flashes of lightning, rumblings, peals of thunder and a severe earthquake. No earthquake like it has ever occurred since mankind has been on earth, so tremendous was the quake.19 The great city split into three parts, and the cities of the nations collapsed. God remembered Babylon the Great and gave her the cup filled with the wine of the fury of his wrath.20 Every island fled away and the mountains could not be found.21 From the sky huge hailstones, each weighing about a hundred pounds,[a] fell on people. And they cursed God on account of the plague of hail,because the plague was so terrible.
Revelation 6 I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals. Then I heard one of the four living creatures say in a voice like thunder, “Come!”2 I looked, and there before me was a white horse! Its rider held a bow, and he was given a crown, and he rode out as a conqueror bent on conquest.
3 When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living creature say, “Come!”4 Then another horse came out, a fiery red one. Its rider was given power to take peace from the earth and to make people kill each other. To him was given a large sword.
5 When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand.6 Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds[a] of wheat for a day’s wages,[b] and six pounds[c] of barley for a day’s wages,[d] and do not damage the oil and the wine!”
7 When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature say, “Come!”8 I looked, and there before me was a pale horse! Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.
9 When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.10 They called out in a loud voice, “How long,Sovereign Lord, holy and true, until you judge the inhabitants of the earth and avenge our blood?”11 Then each of them was given a white robe, and they were told to wait a little longer, until the full number of their fellow servants, their brothers and sisters,[e] were killed just as they had been.
12 I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. The sun turned black like sackcloth made of goat hair, the whole moon turned blood red,13 and the stars in the sky fell to earth, as figs drop from a fig tree when shaken by a strong wind.14 The heavens receded like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was removed from its place.
15 Then the kings of the earth, the princes, the generals, the rich, the mighty, and everyone else, both slave and free, hid in caves and among the rocks of the mountains.16 They called to the mountains and the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us[f] from the face of him who sits on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb!17 For the great day of their[g] wrath has come, and who can withstand it?”
The earthquake, Revelation 6:12; "There was a great earthquake." The word used here denotes a shaking or agitation of the earth. The effect, when violent, is to produce important changes - opening chasms in the earth; throwing down houses and temples; sinking hills, and elevating plains; causing ponds and lakes to dry up, or forming them where none existed; elevating the ocean from its bed, rending rocks, etc. As all that occurs in the opening of the other seals is symbolical, it is to be presumed that this is also, and that for the fulfillment of this we are not to look for a literal earthquake, but for such agitations and changes in the world as would be properly symbolized by this. The earthquake, as a symbol, would merely denote great agitations or overturnings on the earth. The particular character of those changes must be determined by other circumstances in the symbol that would limit and explain it.
